Criteria for Novice and Intermediate Categories for ANB Victoria

Novice Competitors:

Competing as a novice for ANB Victoria (Rules may vary from state to state and is to the descretion of the promoter of your chosen event) means you have not competed in a bodybuilding competition ever for ANB or any other federation. A novice competitor may choose a second division to enter where they will only be required to do round 1 and 2 in that 2nd division.

Intermediate Division Competitors:

Intermediate is a stepping stone for competitors not eligible to compete in novice but feel they cant compete in an open class.

In the case of the competitor placing 3rd in another federation:

3rd in novice, masters, junior or teenage = eligible

3rd in Intermediate or open = ineligible

Easter tips and strategies

With Easter than a week away have you got a plan of attack so you don’t take your eyes off the goal? Remember its quality not quantity where the chocolate is concerned if you can plan it into your plan. Engage yourself in positive conversation with your family and friends without putting the focus on yourself regarding what you eat etc. Remind yourself that we don’t question a vegetarian or a diabetic person etc when they choose to eat what they do!

Get Motivated... Break those habits that may be holding you back!

The biggest thing about reaching your goals is staying motivated and it no secret that that can be hard to do all the time!

If there is a habit or behaviour about yourself you want to change than we need to look at the underlying beliefs and feelings related to that behavior.

We are creatures of habits and sometimes we may even think it’s easier to continue the behavior rather than changing it. Some of the reasons one might not want to change a behavior is

Another update by Tony Haranas - World Masters Bodybuilding Champion

Good morning all and I hope you have a fabulous week.

I thought I'd share this article which appeared recently in the age. It act as a timely reminder about the lengths that advertiser sometimes go in order to sell their products.

Fat-free foods fail the test

MARK METHERELL

February 17, 2012 The AgeMORE than 100 food products, ranging from breakfast cereals to lollies making ''fat-free'' claims, fail to provide acceptable levels of nutrition, the official food regulator says.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand today launches a national debate on long-delayed measures to control nutrition and health claims on Australia's food.

The agency says that when products making ''fat-free'' or ''percentage fat-free'' claims are assessed for their overall nutritional value in terms of protein, dietary and vegetable content, more than 100 would fail to make the grade.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT "A bad workout is better than no workout" By Tony Haranas

In bygone days we had no need to exercise because most of us performed incidental exercise such as hunting for food as we did in the cave man era, then doing menial labour to earn our living so we burnt all our excess energy that way, and because we worked so hard we were physically fit with an elevated metabolic system.

So we could eat carbs such as pasta, rice and bread with dinner without the risk of fat gain.

Think about in the old days, the only fat people were the gentry and the rich, very rarely would you see a fat labourer.

Phenylalanine - What is it and is it good or bad for you? You decide!

"Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, which means that it is essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, phenylalanine must be obtained from food. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. It is available in three chemical forms: L-phenylalanine, the natural form of phenylalanine found in proteins throughout the body; (2) D-phenylalanine, a mirror image of L-phenylalanine that is synthesized in a laboratory; and (3) DL-phenylalanine, a combination of the previous two forms.

The body converts phenylalanine into tyrosine, another amino acid essential for making proteins, certain brain chemicals, and thyroid hormones. Symptoms of phenylalanine deficiency include confusion, lack of energy, decreased alertness, decreased memory, and diminished appetite.

On the other hand, a rare metabolic disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU) occurs in people who are missing an enzyme that is needed to properly metabolize phenylalanine. Symptoms of PKU, which tend to appear between three and six months of age, include eczema, developmental delay, an abnormally small head, and hyperactivity. If it is not treated before three weeks of age, PKU can cause severe, irreversible mental retardation. In the United States, newborns are tested for PKU during the first 48 to 72 hours of life.

A reminder about banned substances in your supplements

With competition preparation for many well under way for 2012 it means planning diets, training and supplementation programmes. With the right preparation it can mean the difference between first and second place and ANB would like to remind you that when it comes to supplementation to be aware of exactly what you are taking. It’s a trend for many to buy now online their supplements either for convenience or that it is sometimes quite a bit cheaper. What some competitors have found in the last few years is that they have jeopardized their placings when they have been randomly drug tested by ASADA and found that the supplement they were taking in fact had a banned substance in it. One of the warnings we can share is that Methylhexaneamine is one ingredient that if found in your body when tested that it is a 2 year ban. This ingredient is in my eyes the trend that alot of pre-workout formulas have now it them. A reminder that there are plenty of great pre-workout formulas that if taken correctly and the ...
